The American Dental Association recommends that you see your dentist and/or dental hygienist every 6 months. However, some people require this service more often due to their periodontal condition.

We prefer white fillings because they “bond” to tooth structure and therefore help strengthen a tooth weakened by decay. Not only do they look better, but recent clinical research indicates a well-done composite resin can be expected to outlast a “silver” amalgam filling.

Teeth whitening, or teeth bleaching, is a cosmetic dentistry procedure designed to remove stains and discolorations as well as lighten the teeth. The level of bleaching that can be achieved will depend on the level of discoloration of the teeth and what types of stains are present. Teeth that are brown or yellow due to coffee, tea or smoking will generally lighten more than teeth that are gray due to stains within the teeth.

Veneering a tooth means to cover its facial or front surface. It is actually very similar to placing acrylic fingernails on top of natural nails. Veneers are used to enhance shapes and colors of teeth as well as to close spaces between teeth and to cover up significant stains such as those caused by tetracycline.

A dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a pontic, which is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. Two crowns holding it in place are attached onto your teeth on each side of the false tooth. This is known as a fixed bridge. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures.

Dental implants are a restorative dentistry option designed to replace missing teeth. Implant dentistry involves embedding a screw or post into the bone, creating a stable base for a prosthetic tooth. When properly performed, dental implants can achieve the look and feel of natural teeth. It is the closest thing to getting your natural tooth back.
A discussion with your restorative dentist and possibly a maxillofacial surgeon will help determine your candidacy for dental implants.
